Why A Board Certified Attorney?

Cathy S. Compton was one of only 5 women certified for 2014 by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS) in criminal law. Only about one percent of all lawyers in the state of Texas are certified in criminal law by the TBLS. Certified criminal law specialists have experience in the preparation and trial of serious criminal matters. They must have extensive knowlege of state and federal constitutional law, evidence, procedure and the penal laws involved in these types of matters.


The Board Certification process is rigorous, with ongoing requirements after initial certification. In order to even qualify to take the certification examination, an attorney must show an extensive amout of experience. An applicant for certification must:

  • have been in practive a minimum of five years with three years of substantial involvement in an area of law

  • have completed TBLS-approved Continuing Legal Eduation course requirements

  • furnish at least 10 qualifed, vetted references

  • provide extensive, relevant experience documention

  • pass a comprehensive, day-long speciality area examination


Board Certified lawyers earn the right to publicly represent themselves as a specialist in a select area of the law. In fact, they are the only attorneys allowed by the State Bar of Texas to do so. This designation sets them apart as being an attorney with the highest public commitment to excellence in their area of law.


Cathy S. Compton is not only an attorney who has earned the title of "specialist" in criminal law; she is also a member of the College of the State Bar. The College of the State Bar of Texas in an honorary society of lawyers who are among the best trained attorneys in Texas. Members are qualified attorneys who are interested in both high ethical standards and improved training for all Texas attorneys. The College recognizes Texas lawyers who attend at least double the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) required by the State Bar of Texas.
